East Uplands December Update
A crew from the Northwest Youth Corps (NYC) and a crew from the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) Community Wildfire Protection Program worked together in the East Uplands Common Area (EUCA) on December 12th and 13th, 2023. They began where the Common Area widens out between Lot #126 on the West side and Lot #123 on the East side cutting down and cutting up fuel ladders, invasive species, and debris and spreading it on the ground. The NYC crew returned to work a third day on December 14th.
Thanks to the hard work of the two crews, they cleared up the entire Common Area North and East of the starting point, including part of the large blackberry patch on the North border. Over the 3 days, 13 people worked a total of 250 hours. Both crews were paid with funds earmarked for fuels reduction work. The NYC crew was paid with funding from Senate Bill 762 and the local ODF crew was paid with funding from State ODF funds. No THOA funds were spent on this project. We are very grateful for the collaboration of NYC and ODF and for their expertise and generous contribution to maintaining the Common Area and for our continuing relationship.
Barb Gunn, EUCA Contact Person, communicated with all adjacent THOA members and non-THOA neighbors to alert them to work commencing. Big thanks to Barb Gunn for coordinating with ODF and NYC and to Steve Gunn for helping with staking the area and hosting the crews. Please click here for photos.
For East Uplands, the area from 37th Avenue going north was cleared of blackberry, bamboo, fire ladders, and spurge laurel. Cleared foliage and wood was removed from the area. There is now a clear firebreak between the houses along this corridor. Please click here for photos.
For Dellwood Lawrence, the area was cleared of grasses, blackberry like last year and all remaining blackberry on the north/south path was cleared creating a clear firebreak. Please click here for photos.
For West, False brome was treated in June. Please click here for photos.
For East Wetlands, THOA members and adjoining members are working on a plan to apportion work. That work will include cutting back grasses and blackberry from the stream which is THOA property.
Please email [email protected] for location information and to RSVP.
